    ETM Advisory Committee Member Walfredo Toscanini passed away on December 31 at the age of 82. An architect and political activist, he also worked to preserve and disseminate the artistic legacy of his family throughout his lifetime.

    ETM Partner PS 48 is one of 3 top winners in the Glee Give a Note Campaign

    Over a million votes cast helped determine the 73 winning schools with grants ranging from $10,000 to $50,000. Of the 73 winning schools, only three were awarded the grand-prize of $50,000, one of which was NYC’s own PS 48 Joseph Drake in the Bronx, an Education Through Music (ETM) partner school.

    Giving Back Through Music

    This fall, singers and musicians hosted several concerts to benefit ETM. On October 22nd, three Princeton University a cappella groups held their second annual ETM benefit concert. When Worlds Collide, a cover band comprised of New York Life Insurance employees, also held two benefit concerts in support of ETM.

    ETM Academy Prepares Music Teachers for Upcoming School Year

    This summer, ETM launched its annual Academy with two days of intensive workshops to prepare music teachers for the 2011-12 school year. Training  covered topics such as lesson planning, curriculum mapping, classroom management, repertoire selection, music technology training, choral and instrumental conducting, and ensemble structure.

    ETM Students Shine at the MS 180 Music Tech Lab Opening

    On Thursday October 6th  Education Through Music (ETM) unveiled a brand new Music Technology Lab at M.S. 180, a public middle school in the Bronx. This technology lab has been two years in the making and features state-of-the art music making equipment that will spark students' creativity and inspire them for a lifetime.

    Professional Development: Fostering a School Environment that Supports Music Education

    ETM kicked off the year with a whirlwind of professional development workshops for classroom teachers at its partner schools.  These fall sessions encouraged classroom teachers to use their music teacher as a resource and highlighted the ways in which music can reinforce the concepts and skills they are implementing in the classroom.

    St. Ann’s School String Orchestra Performs at Ford Foundation Celebration

    On September 28th, the string orchestra from St. Ann’s school in East Harlem performed at the Ford Foundation in celebration of the 15th anniversary of its Good Neighbor Committee.  The Committee is a special philanthropic initiative of the Foundation that allows non-grantmaking staff members the opportunity to support local organizations.  This year also marks the 75th anniversary of the Ford Foundation.
